Temazcal

One of the best experiences that we offer is the ancient Mayan ceremony called a Temazcal which is the equivalent of a modern day sweat lodge. The name temazcal comes from the  Nahuatl word that means “house of heat”. This ancient Mayan ritual is without a doubt a life changing experience. As you take this odyssey you will learn and understand why the Mayan Shamans took their native ancestors on this journey as well. While in the dome the shaman will explain the different stages of each “puerta” or door as you are enveloped by the healing powers of herb drenched vapor created by the “abuelas” (hot volcanic stones). As you detoxify you will sing, play instruments and chant during this healing process inside the dome’s room that represents Mother Earth’s womb.

When you leave the dome you will be reborn again lighter and cleansed. Cool off and seal the healing experience with a dip in the freshwater cenote, a unique natural sinkhole only found in the Yucatan. From there we will visit the school where our charity Dreams for Mayan Children brought groups of volunteers to paint, build gardens and a ball court where the children play games just like their ancient ancestors did.

The temazcal (or sweat lodge) was traditionally

used by the Mayan culture to purify the body, mind, and spirit to reach a deep connection with Mother Earth.
